The quality of treated wastewater coming from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) by lagoons in Ouagadougou is not conform to national standard for discharge or for reuse in agriculture. The present study on the natural purifying capacity of the channel downstream of the WWTP aims to test the hypothesis that the quality of treated water running off through the gutter can significantly be improved for gardening. Then, the analyzes were done according French standards. So, the results between the output and a distance of 3 km along the channel indicate alkaline pH values slightly variable. Regarding carbon pollution, the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) average decreases from 1280 to 720 mg /l, while the average levels of Suspended Solids (SS) decreases from 343 to 300 mg /l. The nutrient contents such as orthophosphate and ammonia decrease with averages ranging from 9.18 and 6.05 mg /l for the former and 12 to 3.35 mg /l for the second whiletheconcentrationofnitratepassfrom2.91to6.37mg/l. Concerning microbiological pollution, faecal coliforms level increases from 3800 CFU /100 ml to 11300 CFU / 100 ml. In sum, there is a small auto scrubber power affected by factors as such as infiltration, high evaporation and anthropogenic activities near the channel.

On Confidence Intervals Construction for Measurement System Capability Indicators.

Abstract      pdf Full text PDF
Index: 10.183x/B610816 aned
There are many criteria that have been proposed to determine the capability of a measurement system, all based on estimates of variance components. Some of them are the Precision to Tolerance Ratio, the Signal to Noise Ratio and the probabilities of misclassification. For most of these indicators, there are no exact confidence intervals, since the exact distributions of the point estimators are not known. In such situations, two approaches are widely used to obtain approximate confidence intervals: the Modified Large Samples (MLS) methods initially proposed by Graybill and Wang, and the construction of Generalized Confidence Intervals (GCI) introduced by Weerahandi. In this work we focus on the construction of the confidence intervals by the generalized approach in the context of Gauge repeatability and reproducibility studies. Since GCI are obtained by simulation procedures, we analyze the effect of the number of simulations on the variability of the confidence limits as well as the effect of the size of the experiment designed to collect data on the precision of the estimates. Both studies allowed deriving some practical implementation guidelinesin the use of the GCI approach. We finally present a real case study in which this technique was applied to evaluate the capability of a destructive measurement system.

Abstract       pdf Full text PDF
Index: 10.183x/C611724 aned
The effect of restriping on the gaps accepted at a two-way stop-sign controlled intersection were investigated through a before/after restriping study. The major street at the study site was re-striped as a traffic calming strategy. Before re-striping the major Street was a two-way two-lane road without any bicycle lanes. After re-striping it became a two-way one-lane road with a two-way left-turn lane in the middle and one bicycle lane on each side. The results indicated that the critical gap sizes increased for both the left-turns and right-turns after re-striping compared to the before case. These increases were found to be statistically significant. The findingsshow that the traffic calming measures implemented appear to result in more caution being undertaken by drivers, as represented by higher critical gaps after the re-striping project.

Water used in industries creates a wastewater that has potential hazards for our environment, because of introducing various contaminates such as heavy metals in to soil and water resources. In this study, a modification method was adopted to enhance metal ion adsorption on soybean hulls using NaOH and citric acid. The batch experiments were carried out to optimize parameters like pH, adsorbent dose, initial concentration and contact time. Equilibrium data were best represented by Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption kinetic data were adequately fitted to the pseudo-second order kinetic model. At optimum conditions of the parameters investigated, 99% removal of Zn (II) was achieved. On the basis of experimental results MSH was found to be an excellent adsorbent for the Zn (II) removal from wastewater.

Index: 10.183x/F610816 aned
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to apply a Fuzzy Analytical Hieratical Process model FAHP for estimating students' importance indexes problem, where the measures of students' attitudes and responses are often uncertain or difficult to determine by using non-fuzzy model. Fuzzy set theory treats a kind of uncertainty called fuzziness. It shows that the boundary of "yes" or "no" is ambiguous and appears in the meaning of words or included in the subjunctives or recognition of human beings. Design/methodology/approach: This paper adapts FAHP to analysis students' satisfaction for the services submitted by the university to enhance learning process and circumstance environment for students, this area of researches is still out of university importance. For the purposes of the survey, questionnaires were designed for all the factors which are affecting in students' satisfaction and most probably all these factors are taken according to their suitable priority. There were five main criterions in the questionnaires. Criterion one focuses on administrative university services Si, the second criterion concentrate with teaching and learning process Ti, while the third criterion is university climate and student activities Ai, the fourth criterion covers the administrative facilities Fi, and the fifth criterion is learning facilities students Li, were asked to measure their perceived experiences with those criterions. Each criterion contains some of sub criteria. Findings: The results illustrate that the quality of teachers T1, Opportunities for recreational activities A1, fair evaluation for students T6, and remedial support A3 are the most important indexes for students. The proposed model would help decision-makers to enhancement the quality of the services and may be adding other facility to make the university more attractive. Research limitations/implications: This paper makes some assumptions such as the number of sample are taken from seven colleges only and not cover all colleges in the university and concentrated about the final levels. Originality/value: This paper introduces fuzzy theory with AHP approach to the research of university services as customers in public firms and it has reached some valuable conclusions, which has opened up a new field of study in the universities services area.

Abstract      pdf Full text PDF
Index: 10.183x/L617278 aned
In the literature, internal tube baffles are widely studied. There is a lack of data for baffles mounted on outside of the tubes. This study aims to fill this gap. Therefore, the effect of baffle inclination angles on heat transfer improvement has been studied experimentally. The experiments were carried out for forced convection of air on a circular tube with inclined baffles. Air has been used as the cold fluid. Experimental results for eight different velocities of air flow (2 – 20 m/s) are presented. Pitch between baffles is 12 mm.The baffle inclination angles with respect to the tube axis were 45º, 60º and 80º. Water temperature is fixed as 65 °C. According to the experimental results, the baffles with an inclination angle of 45º enhance the heat transfer over 60º and 80º around 13.7 % and 10.5 %, respectively. However, pressure drop values for 45º and 60º are 18 % higher than pressure drop values for 80º. The empirical correlations of the Nusselt number have also been obtained for each angle.
